Launch of SPARK 2010

Social entrepreneurs with bright ideas that will provide training, skills development, employment and independent living opportunities to tackle homelessness are being challenged to bid for a share of a £1.6 million investment fund.

The Spark 2010 Challenge – building on the success of 2008 and 2009 – was launched by founders John Montague, CEO of The TREES Group, and Nigel Kershaw, Chair of Big Issue Invest, with the continued support of the Department for Communities and Local Government.

“Spark is much more than a competition or a grant application.  It is a cross-sector collaboration that brings together leading organisations and social enterprises from the public, private and third sector to work together to build sustainable solutions to homelessness,” said John Montague.

“For the third year we are immensely pleased to announce the involvement of Spark partners PricewaterhouseCoopers, Places for People and BT, and welcome Willmott Dixon to the partnership.

Bringing together these partners brings value to their businesses, employees and the communities in which they work.

It also shows how social enterprise can transform the lives of homeless people by providing training and employment and a route out of street and hostel life,” said Nigel Kershaw.

Entrants for Spark 2010 need to submit their business case via www.sparkchallenge.org.uk by 5pm on 13 August.

BBC Children in Need Grants

You may well know that BBC Children in Need gives grants to organisations which are working to make a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. But did you know that we don’t just give grants to charities but to a range of not-for-profit groups?

BBC Children in Need accepts applications from social enterprises including community interest companies and industrial and provident societies. Our principle that we only fund not-for-profit organisations is paramount when considering applications from social enterprises. You will need to convince us – generally through your constituted objects and dividend arrangements – that your main reason for operating is to make a difference for disadvantaged children and young people and not to maximise shareholder profits. We will also need to see that you have a restriction on distributing your profits.

To find out more about what we fund and how to apply, visit our website bbc.co.uk/pudsey.

Great Deals on Offer for Local Independent Retailers

The Mall Bristol in Broadmead (formerly The Galleries) is encouraging local independent retailers and business start-ups to contact them to discuss current lettings possibilities within the city centre shopping centre.

Colin Lang, General Manager of The Mall Bristol said, “There are currently some great opportunities for local independent retailers within The Mall and many would be surprised at the flexibility we can offer both in terms of the length of the lease and the cost of our shop units. We are always looking for new retailers to come into the centre and add a fresh, local flavour to our list of existing big name tenants and we are happy to have an informal chat to anyone looking to explore all of their options within the city centre.”

The Mall Bristol has also announced a number of new lettings over the past few months, including three new food outlets, Rice, The Baguette Shop & Noodles, and has noted renewed interest in their Retail Merchandising Units (RMUs):

“A number of people who have been made redundant seem to have seen this as an opportunity to start afresh, and are finally making their dreams of launching a new business a reality.” Colin adds, “Our RMUs also offer an ideal launch pad for start-up businesses as these stands offer our shoppers a broad range of unique and usually local products. The opportunity is there for new local businesses to test their products in the market and get feedback direct from their customers without the commitment of a long-term lease or the investment in shop fitting, and we will support these traders all the way.”

For more information, please call Colin Lang or Simon Dix on 0117 9290569 or visit themall.co.uk
